Grace started vocal lessons today.
We talked about projection, getting her mouth open, her throat open, and trying to get the sound out of her throat and into the air.
I suggested she watch some videos on vocal projection to help get an idea of how it works.

This is called Death Note - L's Theme
November 24th, 2020
We took a day off today.
November 17th, 2020
This may be the last week for Hikaru Nara - we worked out the last bit of the bridge, and the solo in the quiet part of the chorus... this instrumental part involved learning something we've never covered about proper fingerings. The general rule of "thumb" is that you don't want to run out of fingers, so tuck the thumb under on the way up a long scale of notes. In this instance, the thumb should come after the middle finger.
November 10th, 2020
Grace worked on Hikaru Nara again today - about 15 minutes in, she started feeling really emotional, and couldn't get past it until we were just about out of time.
November 3rd, 2020
We wrote out the melody to the Goose House verse today, and Grace went through it a few times.
October 27th, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnXkhkEvNIM&ab_channel=Goosehouse

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MtOpB5LlUA
We learned the main part of it, the "left hand" or bass line, and we'll save the melody for the next lesson.
January 7th, 2019
Grace went over the Alyssa Reid song she'd been learning and we focused a bit on the bridge... after that, near the end of the lesson we added a new song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNcv91o1qzA
I charted it, but didn't go over it much with her.
November 19th, 2018
Grace had been struggling with the diminished chord changes from F# to Gdim, so we focused on that for pretty-much the whole lesson.
November 12th, 2018
We added a new song, by Virginia to Vegas called We Are Stars:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6arxhxPJKs
October 29th, 2018
We started Phoenix
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDrc_D7itjA
October 22nd, 2018
We went over the Hedley bridge, and the quiet spot where the piano comes out in the higher octave.
October 15th, 2018
We worked on playing along with the recording, which upset Grace somewhat. We talked it through, and spent some time trying to calm down. Eventually she agreed to do it, and we made progress on the song.
The bridge still needs to be learned, and she should continue practicing going from the chorus to the second verse's intro.
October 1st, 2018

September 10th, 2018
Grace started a new song, You Say by Laren Daigle:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqM23Ms_lqM

Grace and I worked on her song again and focused on the areas where she had trouble.
February 26th, 2018
I skipped Grace's lesson tonight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x4uvxpKNmo
October 23rd, 2017

Grace went through All We Do, then we worked on vocals. We did some minor 1,2,3b,4,5 scales on Ah and Tee, then sang Ah on each note of the song.
Finally, we sang through the song. She needs to focus on:
-laser beam sound
-Using the diaphragm
-full voice, not breathy

Grace and I went over Miss Independent by Kelly Clarkson:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOpwA6rGUR4

October 5th, 2015
Grace went to a birthday party so we'll catch up later.
September 28th, 2015
Grace did a really good job of practicing Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson, so we finished up the bridge, and then added a new Kelly Clarkson song, Miss Independent.

We still haven't got to the bridge yet.
February 9th, 2015
I had trouble with my server yesterday, so couldn't make notes.
Grace and I reviewed the Taylor Swift song "Clean" that she has been working on. It's good, and so we decided to move on. She didn't want to record it.
She wanted to learn Taylor Swift's "Style" next:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-NhlzIjdss
I wrote out the chords for her to work on.

Grace and I reviewed the songs from Christmas, and then added a new Taylor Swift song, Clean.
December 15th, 2014
Grace played through the songs Jingle Bells and We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and then we recorded it.
We took a number of takes, then it crashed and I lost it, and we recorded it again.
It sounds great!
December 8th, 2014
Grace and I worked on We Wish You a Merry Christmas (I seem to have missed talking about that last week). She's close.
We then reviewed Jingle Bells, which she seemed to have forgotten. I asked her to work on both songs for this week.
November 24th, 2014
Grace and I went over Jingle Bells together, and I showed her the chords. We added a low bass note flourish at "HEY" and the end of the song.
November 17th, 2014
We reviewed Down by the Bay and talked about using the whole hand -- all the fingers.
We added the left hand, and talked about minor-majors, and making the notes in the left hand match the melody as far as accidentals go.
We went over the song many times, just trying to cement it in her head.
She didn't want to move ahead with any other song until she'd mastered this, so we'll do it another week.
UPDATE: changed her mind, and we added Jingle Bells.
November 10th, 2014
Grace wanted to leran a new song this week, so we added Down by the Bay, which Rosie is learning.
She struggled with memorizing the whole melody, which is understandable considering how it changes from line to line.
She could practice listening to the pitch she's playing and thinking about whether it's higher or lower than the pitch she just played.
October 13th, 2014
No lessons this week (Thanksgiving).
October 6th, 2014
Grace reviewed Mary Had a Little Lamb with me, and it's pretty good. The arpeggios with the left hand are nearly there.
We then added Baa Baa Black Sheep, and I helped her work through that a few times.
September 29th, 2014
Grace and I went over the same things that Rose did-- arpeggios with the left hand over Mary Had a Little Lamb.
She's close!
September 22nd, 2014
Today we reviewed London Bridge, and then added Mary Had a Little Lamb.
We used both hands for Mary, C and G chords in the left.
September 15th, 2014
Grace and Rose basically got the same lesson today-- we learned the names of the keys, using the animal system, and I did some quizzing to help them get used to it. Gracey picked it up a bit faster.
We then learned the song London Bridge, using note names, Grace learning the left hand where Rose wasn't quite ready for that.
